When pain persists the body changes how it responds to perceived threats and potentially painful experiences. The Central Nervous System (CNS) becomes more and more sensitive to pain and the pain signal becomes less and less accurate over time. Once chronic pain gets a foot hold, even thinking of a stressful event can trigger the pain response. Working with a chronic pain counselling specialist is an opportunity to dispel myths and misconceptions about pain (No, chronic pain is not all in your head; No, if you just think positively or push through the pain it will not just go away; Yes, there are ways to manage pain effectively without pain medications).
